Storyline

China will strive to promote steady and healthy economic growth amid increasing downward pressure, said an official from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday.

NBS spokesman Mao Shengyong said China's economic data should be analyzed in a bigger context of the world economic situation when he was asked to comment on the drops in a few indicators of the Chinese economy in November at a press conference in Beijing.

"With regard to the external environment, the world economic situation has undergone a few changes. The growth momentum of the world economy is waning. Most recently, some major developed economies and emerging economies are seeing decreases in some main growth indicators. And also, some international organizations have also lowered their projections of the world economic growth for this year and next year," said Mao.

Mao said the indicators for employment, prices and economic structure have remained stable. In November, the unemployment rate in China's urban areas surveyed stood at 4.8 percent, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month. New jobs in urban areas kept increasing.

Meanwhile, China's new growth drivers have been developing rapidly, said Mao. The number of newly registered companies reached 18,100 on a daily basis during the January-November period. The added value of industries such as high-tech manufacturing and equipment manufacturing as well as strategic emerging industries have all maintained fast growth.

However, Mao noted, some growth indicators dropped to some extent. This showed increasing downward pressure, especially amid an even severer and more complex external environment and mounting changes and uncertainties, he said.

He said work in the next step will be focused on reforms and policy implementation.

"Therefore, in the next step we are going to intensify the supply-side structural reform and further implement the policies that have been rolled out. In particular, we are going to implement the policies to stabilize employment, finance, foreign trade, foreign investment, domestic investment and expectations, enhance the effect of the policies in order to promote steady and healthy economic growth," said Mao.
