Storyline

A third-generation nuclear power unit of a China-France joint venture in southern Guangdong Province has completed its demonstration run and is ready for commercial operation, announced its co-builders at a news briefing held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing on Friday.

Gao Ligang, president of the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Company (CGNPC), told the press that the No. 1 unit of the Taishan nuclear power plant had completed 168 hours of demonstration run as of 17:00 Thursday, saying it is the world's first third-generation European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) nuclear power unit for commercial operation.

The largest Chinese-French project in the energy field, the Taishan nuclear power plant is built and operated by a company jointly set up by the CGNPC, French energy supplier Electricite de France (EDF), and Guangdong Yudean Group. It uses the EPR for its No.1 and No. 2 power units.

The project has created conditions for the development of French companies in China, said Fabrice Fourcade, vice president of the EDF group and chairman of the EDF China.

"These achievements cannot do away with the long-term cooperation and persistent efforts in terms of standardizing nuclear power industry. It will particularly benefit us for the safer operation of nuclear power units," he said.

The construction of the No. 1 power unit began in 2009 and the unit succeeded in grid-connecting on June 29. The construction of the No. 2 power unit began in 2010.

EPR used in the Taishan reactors is the third-generation nuclear power technology jointly developed by the EDF and Framatome.
