Storyline

China is hoping for win-win results from the trade negotiations with the United States, said a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks at a regular press conference when commenting on the statement from White House National Trade Council Director Peter Navarro last Thursday that the U.S. side must "stay tough" in the trade negotiations with China and focus on China's structural reform.

"The economic and trade delegations of China and the United States are in close contact about the negotiations in accordance with the spirit of the consensus reached during the meeting of the two heads of state. We hope that the delegations on the two sides will effectively implement the consensus and steer the negotiations at faster pace toward win-win results and the removal of all additional tariffs on the premise of mutual respect, equality, credibility and matching promises with concrete actions," said the spokeswoman.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump in Buenos Aires on Dec. 1 after attending the 13th Group of 20 summit.

The two heads of state agreed not to impose new additional tariffs, and agreed to instruct their economic teams to step up negotiations toward the removal of all additional tariffs and reach a concrete agreement that would bring about win-win results.

In response to Navarro's statement about China's structural reform, the spokeswoman said: "For Mr. Navarro and those having the same opinions, I recommend that they should study the speech made by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the conference celebrating the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up this morning. He said the splendid Chinese civilization is the only one in human history that has extended uninterrupted for more than 5,000 years, and there is no textbook of golden rules to follow for reform and development in China, a country with over 5,000 years of civilization and more than 1.3 billion people," said the spokeswoman.

"General Secretary Xi Jinping also said in his speech that 'What to reform and how to go about the reform must be consistent with the overarching goal of improving and developing the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics and modernizing China's system and capacity for governance. We will resolutely reform what should and can be reformed, and make no change where there should not and can not be any reform,'" said Hua.
