Storyline

China held a grand gathering Tuesday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the country's reform and opening-up, a great revolution that has changed the destiny of the Chinese nation and also influenced the world.

President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the event which began at around 10:00 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

December 18, 1978 was an important day to be remembered in the history of the Chinese nation, the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and the history of the People's Republic of China, said Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission at the gathering.

On this very day, the Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee was convened, which was a great turning point of far-reaching significance in the Party's history since the founding of New China, and heralded the start of a great journey of reform, opening-up and socialist modernization, he said.

"Reform and opening-up is a great reawakening of our Party, one that nurtured great creativity in both theory and practice for our Party. Reform and opening-up is a great revolution in the history of the Chines people and the Chinese nation, one that propelled a quantum lead in the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics."

He called the founding of the CPC, the founding of the People's Republic of China, and the pursuit of reform and opening-up and socialism with Chinese characteristics are three milestones on the way toward the great national rejuvenation in the modern times.

They represent the three historic events taking place after the May Fourth Movement in 1919, according to Xi.

Xi said that in the past 40 years, China has always adhered to freeing its minds, seeking truth from facts, moving with the times, and applying a realistic and pragmatic approach; unswervingly following the guidance of Marxism and the basic principles of scientific socialism.

"Greatness is achieved through hardship and difficulties. In the past 40 years, we have worked to free people's minds and seek truth from facts and broken new ground through bold trials and reforms. Four decades ago, reform and opening-up ushered in a new phase, progressed to a new century, and put China on a new starting point. Today four decades on, China has entered a new era. Through four decades of united, arduous and persistent struggles, the Communist Party of China has led the Chinese people on a soul-stirring historical journey and achieved epic accomplishments that moved heaven and earth," Xi said.

In the past 40 years, China has been committed to fulfilling the central task of economic development, unleashing and developing productive forces; to the path of socialist political advancement with Chinese characteristics; to developing an advanced socialist culture; to ensuring and improving people's living standards through development; and to environmental protection, resources conservation, said Xi.

In the past 40 years, China has upheld the absolute Party leadership over the armed forces; stayed committed to the great cause of peaceful reunification of the motherland; stayed committed to an independent foreign policy of peace; and made continued efforts to strengthen and improve Party leadership, according to Xi.

Xi said that the progress made in the 40 years of reform and opening-up has profoundly changed China, the Chinese nation, the Chinese people and the CPC.

"What we have achieved in the past 40 years is not a godsend, still less a gift from others. It comes from the hard work, wisdom and courage of all members of the Party and the people of all ethnic groups in China. In just a few decades, we have completed an industrialization process that took developed countries several hundred years. The Chinese people have achieved what was once impossible. We are immensely proud of our fellow countrymen and women who have worked an unprecedented miracle," Xi said.

According to Xi, the past 40 years eloquently prove that the path, theory, system and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics pioneered in the wake of the Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee by the Chinese people of all ethnic groups rally under the leadership of the CPC are completely correct, and the CPC basic theory, line and policy that have since taken shape are completely correct.

The past 40 years eloquently prove that China's development provides a successful experience and offers a bright prospect for other developing countries as they strive for modernization, said Xi, adding that China's development has effectively served the cause of world peace and development and represents a great contribution of the Chinese nation to the progress of human civilization.

The past 40 years eloquently prove that the reform and opening-up is an important way for the Party and the people to stride ahead to catch up with the times, the only path to uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics, a game-changing move in making China what it is today, and a game-changing move for the country to achieve its two centenary goals and its great national rejuvenation, said Xi.

Xi noted that the lessons learned in the past 40 years of reform and opening-up are an invaluable legacy that the Party and people hold dear to. They are extremely important in steering China's continued endeavor to uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, said Xi.

China must cherish and follow such valuable experience for a long time to come and must enrich and grow such assets through further reform and opening-up, he added.

Xi stressed the leadership of the Party over all work while calling for constantly enhancing and improving the Party's way of leadership.

The people-oriented approach must be adhered to and efforts should be made to keep delivering on the people's aspirations for a better life, he said.

He called for upholding Marxism as the guiding ideology and exploring theoretical innovation based on practice.

He stressed staying on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Continued efforts should be made to improve and develop the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics to harness and enhance the advantages of China's system, said Xi.

He called for continued efforts to take development as the top priority and enhance China's composite national strength.

He underlined China's commitment to opening up wider to the world and promoting joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for humanity.

Continued efforts should be made to exercise full and rigorous governance over the CPC to strengthen its capacity to innovate, power to unite, and energy to fight, said Xi.

He stressed striking a balance between reform, development and stability by maintaining the world view and methodology of dialectical and historical materialism.

Despite all the difficulties standing in the way over the past 40 years, China has met them head-on and grown from strength to strength, Xi said.

"With a lot of sufferings, heavy sacrifices and heroic struggles the Chinese people have had in the long history of early modern times, the Chinese people and Chinese nation have fostered a mighty energy over a long course of history. Today, such an energy has been brought out and offers an irresistible driving force for our national rejuvenation," Xi said.

Turning China into a great modern socialist country and achieving national rejuvenation is like a relay race, in which the baton is passed down from generation to generation, said Xi, adding that every generation must strive for a good score for the sake of future ones.

"We, the entire Party and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, should rally closely around the Party Central Committee, and hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Remaining true to our original aspiration and keeping our mission firmly in mind, we will stay committed to advancing reform and opening-up and see that our people realize their aspirations for a better life. In this way, we will create new and even greater wonders of the Chinese nation in the new era, wonders that will truly impress the world," said Xi.

Premier Li Keqiang presided over the meeting.

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, read a decision to award the personnel who have made outstanding contributions to the country's reform and opening-up.

According to the decision made by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, 100 Chinese were awarded the medals of reform pioneers and 10 foreigners were honored with China reform friendship medals.

Chinese leaders presented the medals to the prize winners.

In the past 40 years, the drive of reform and opening-up has lifted the country's status to the world's second largest economy and China is committed to further reform and opening-up, so as to make greater contributions to the world.

"Reform and opening-up is a great reawakening of our Party, one that nurtured great creativity in both theory and practice for our Party.
