Chinese people's livelihoods have greatly improved throughout the country's 40 years of reform and opening-up, as shown in a grand exhibition in the National Museum of China in Beijing to mark the 40th anniversary.
China's reform and opening-up is a historic journey launched at the third plenary session of the 11th Communist Party of China Central Committee held in December 1978. In the past 40 years, the drive has lifted the country to be the world's second largest economy.
Opened on Nov. 13, the exhibition consists of six zones with over 10,000 exhibits on display, including old photos, documents and models about course of the progress.
According to the data on display, China's personal per capita disposable income has surged from 171 yuan (an estimated 24.6 U.S. dollars) in 1978 to 25,947 yuan (an estimated 3,737 U.S. dollars) in 2017, a 22.8-times growth in real terms.
Meanwhile, 740 million people living in rural areas have been lifted out of poverty in the past 40 years.
In the education sector, college enrollment has increased from 273,000 people in 1977 to 7.61 million people in the past four decades. More universities and colleges have also been built. In 1977, the figure was only 404; and it rose to 2,631 in 2017.
In 2016, health insurance for urban workers and urban residents together under the new system of rural cooperative medical services were integrated into a single system, which covers 1.3 billion residents from both urban and rural areas with higher standards of subsidies. Old-age insurance covered over 900 million senior citizens in 2017.
The report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2017 clearly provided for "implementing the strategy of a healthy China", and the priority of health care policies changed from "curing diseases" to "public health".
In 2018, the personal subsidy for basic health care increased to 490 yuan (75 U.S. dollars) from last year's 450 yuan (69 U.S. dollars). Meanwhile, the government rolled out a poverty-lifting health care movement which allows patients in need to visit the doctor before paying for medication.
