Storyline

The bodies of three Spanish mountaineers and their Peruvian guide, who were killed last weekend by an avalanche in the Andes of Peru, have been found and moved to the city of Huaraz, capital of Peru's northern region of Ancash, according to official sources on Monday.

Although at first the bodies were indicated to be sent to the city of Carhuaz, the authorities decided that they should be sent to Huaraz, a city located more than 400 kilometers north of Lima.

After being identified by several local media, the bodies were transferred by agents of the High Mountain Rescue Unit of the National Police of Peru (PNP), along with members of the Association of Mountain Guides of Peru.

According to information provided on the spot by police and the victims' family, the authorities expect to carry out body repatriation procedure.

Another Spanish mountaineer who survived the accident, identified as Paolo Belmonte Calderon, aged 26, was kept in a good state Monday after being admitted the previous day in a clinic in Huaraz.

A spokesman for the High Mountain Rescue Unit of the PNP explained that the victims had conquered Sunday the snow-covered Mateo, which is more than 5,000 meters in height. But they were caught in the avalanche while preparing to descend.

The Association of Mountain Guides added in a statement that the avalanche dragged the bodies approximately 200 meters away from the original scene, and it is presumed that the accident occurred around noon Sunday.

A rescue team from the Association of Mountain Guides located the bodies during Sunday night. Although the Peruvian guide was alive when being found, he died minutes later due to his injuries.

The President of the Association of Mountain Guides, Rafael Figueroa, declared that the deceased Peruvian had 12 years of experience in mountaineering. Figueroa also said that as glaciers have changed significantly due to climate change, the mountain guide may be caught in surprise in places that were easy to climb before.

Ancash is one of the favorite regions for mountaineers, especially in the Cordillera Blanca, a chain of mountains in the central Andes covered with snow.
