The collapse of an illegally built building not only damaged another nearby structure, but also killed a resident in Zhenlong Town in south China's Guangdong Province Thursday evening.

The six-story building, which was still undergoing interior decoration, in Huiyang District collapsed onto a five-story residential building just 10 meters away and injured a 81-year-old resident.

"The resident shined a flashlight and shouted, 'Help !' I organized a team and rescued them," said Xiang Jinhang, from a local firefighting team.

The old resident later died from the injuries that he sustained in the accident.

The search and rescue work has ended, and unfortunately no one else was trapped.

The proprietor of the collapsed building and the man responsible for its construction are currently being questioned by police. The cause of the accident is under further investigation.

Construction of the building was completed in December last year, without any approval from the local government.
