A snowstorm starting on Friday has killed five people in Midwest of the United States.
The snow blanketed many parts of Missouri, Kansas and other states in the central U.S., disrupting local traffic and power supply. It rapidly started to sweep many states in the northern and eastern parts of the country.
St. Louis, and Columbia were hit by one of the largest snow storms in recent years. Total snow accumulations in Columbia on Friday reached 26 centimeters, a record high in terms of single-day snowfall over the past 100 years.
By Saturday noon, this round of snowstorm had caused more than 700 traffic accidents, which killed 5, and injured another 48.
Two major airports in Chicago saw widespread flight delays due to the weather conditions. Local traffic authorities have mobilized many staff members and vehicles to remove the snow.
"(I'm) throwing salt, while he snowblows over there. Just to make it good tonight, enough to keep it off and (from) slippering, everybody falling over," said a local street cleaner.
Visibility in most of the snow-hit areas will be about 400 meters, the National Weather Service forecast. The snow is expected to continue through Sunday. Roads will become increasingly hazardous, the agency warned.
