Storyline

The Green Sustainable Development Conference was held in Beijing on Thursday and Friday, gathering officials and experts domestically and overseas to discuss the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Themed with sustainable development and global cooperation on green urbanization, attendees achieved consensus that green and sustainable development is the golden key to opening a new round of globalization.

They agreed environmental problems should not be addressed in an isolated way where different industries may have different solutions, but need to be handled in a comprehensive manner, emphasizing collaborations among a variety of entities, including countries, peoples and companies.

"One country cannot act by itself, and the international community has to be pushed by leaders. I am confident that there will be new improvements and it will be decisive. Because, once more, the question is very practical, air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, is it possible for our children to have a good condition of life, and it depends on our decision, internationally, nationally and locally," said Laurent Fabius, former French prime minister.

Douglas Noble, deputy representative of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, stressed that sustainable development is essential to children and descendants.

"Ensuring sustainable and safe environments for children is critical to the work that we do in China, and we've seen lots of good progress over the last four decades, but this year, which is the 30th anniversary of the convention of the rights of the child, is a great year to focus on green and sustainable development for children in China, and to make even more progress on improving the safety of environments, to improve sanitation, hygiene for all children in China, even in the most rural areas," said Noble.

Officials and experts said China's green urbanization and ecological civilization have made great contributions to accelerating sustainable development for the international community and China has been cooperating with other countries to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched by a UN Summit in New York on 25-27 September 2015 and is aimed at ending poverty in all its forms. It envisages "a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination".
