Storyline

Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, said on Thursday that he is not too worried about his daughter Meng Wanzhou, also Huawei's CFO, as he believed the case could be resolved through legal channels.

Ren made the remarks in an exclusive interview with China Central Television (CCTV) in which he also expressed his gratitude to the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government for providing a series of protection for his daughter.

Meng, the company's chief financial officer, was arrested on December 1, 2018 in Canada for alleged violation of sanctions on Iran and then released on bail on December 12. She still awaits a hearing on extradition to the U.S. in February.

After her arrest, Huawei said in a statement that the company was unaware of any wrongdoing by Meng, and the firm complied with all applicable laws.

"First of all, we want to thank the Party and our government for protecting the rights of a citizen, for the consular protection of her and for the management which allowed her to live in dignity. I'm grateful to the Party and state but what we could do is to rely on the power of law," Ren said to CCTV.

Ren said that he had not seen his daughter for a time, but he remains in contact with her after her detention.

"I can talk with my daughter on phone and tell jokes to her. I don't think I should be too worried and I assume that it would take her a quite long time to get this issue settled. I think the most important thing for one's children is that they should grow up right and learn to fly on their own, they should be allowed to fly free, which is the parents' expectation. Her case should be settled through legal channels and we have confidence in the settlement," said Ren.
