Chinese President Xi Jinping inspected Xiong'an New Area in Hebei Province on Wednesday.
At the new area's planning and exhibition center, he listened to the reports on overall planning of Xiong'an, the new area's policy system and construction process.
He also viewed the screening of construction of the intercity railway between Beijing and Xiong'an and had an online video chat with workers at the site.
"The transport must lead the construction of a city and the economic development, so the first thing to do is to build the transport facilities. This Beijing-Xiong'an intercity high-speed railway is the first project carried out, which is what you are building now. You can well imagine how significant it is. You are doing the pioneering work for this strategy crucial for the next millennium and your contributions will be indelible," said Xi.
He also sent his regards and best wishes to the workers.
"Here, on behalf of the Party Central Committee, I'd send endearing greetings and best wishes to you and through you to all the railway constructors and laborers across the country," said Xi.
Then he walked to the administrative service center, where he encouraged the new area's first group of start-up entrepreneurs to grasp the historic development opportunities to make new achievements.
"All of you should take hold of this development opportunity that appears like once in a millennium, and make brilliant achievements. Wish you every success!" said Xi.
In the afternoon, Xi went to an afforestation zone in the new area and took an overall view of the forest from the second-floor of a watching platform. He talked with the forest rangers and said Xiong'an should attach great importance to protecting ecology.
This is Xi's second visit to Xiong'an. He first inspected the new area on Feb. 23, 2017, when he chaired a meeting for the planning and establishment of the Xiong'an New Area.
Hailed as a "millennium strategy," the new area, located about 100 km southwest of Beijing, was officially announced in April 2017. Its main function is to serve as a development hub for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei economic triangle.
Additionally, "non-core" functions of the Chinese capital of Beijing are expected to move there, including offices of some state-owned enterprises, government agencies, and research and development facilities.
