"In general, as people's income level rises, the consumption structure on the whole has been upgraded. Based on the measurement of the Engel coefficient, which is the ratio of food consumption to people's total consumption, it (the Engel coefficient) has been declining for these years, whereas the non-food consumption has increased. That indicates an upgrading of consumption structure."

Storyline

China's overall consumption structure saw an upgrading in 2018, Director of Chinese National Statistics Bureau Ning Jizhe said on Monday in Beijing.

According to Ning, consumption remained the major growth driver, contributing 76.2 percent to GDP growth last year. Retail sales, a main gauge of consumption, rose 9 percent from one year earlier.

The director said the contribution of consumption to economic growth in 2018 is higher than that of the previous year.

"In general, as people's income level rises, the consumption structure on the whole has been upgraded. Based on the measurement of the Engel coefficient, which is the ratio of food consumption to people's total consumption, it (the Engel coefficient) has been declining for these years, whereas the non-food consumption has increased. That indicates the upgrading of consumption structure," he said.

Ning then said the trend of commodity consumption has shifted toward high-quality products.

"Goods of great quality and reasonable prices are well sold. However, high-quality, much expensive goods have also become increasingly popular among middle- and high-income families. As everyone could feel, the proportion of service consumption is growing and the number of tourists making domestic tours witnessed a double-digit increase. Not only for domestic travels, the number of tourists making overseas tours is also huge," added the director.

He also said that as China is transforming from high-speed growth to medium-high speed growth, there is a need for a change in the way of thinking so as to ensure that the economy grows within a reasonable range and strive for higher quality and better results of the economy.
