"What Canada has recently done reminds me of a Chinese ancient saying 'making an empty show of strength'. Firstly, the Canadian side's attempt to woo its so-called allies through microphones to whitewash the issue is in vain and is of no help to resolve it."

4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"Secondly, as for Canada's gratitude for supports from its so-called allies, Germany has not released relevant information. So we have no idea about where Germany's open supports came from. In addition, it mentioned Singapore. As the Singaporean side said in a statement that it's important for all countries to follow legal procedures when dealing with cases with foreign citizens involved, it is right. That's exactly what the Chinese side does. It handles relevant cases by upholding the spirit of the rule of law and following legal procedures. And we wish the Canadian side to do so. I, once again urge Canada to respect the rule of law and China's judicial sovereignty, and stop making irresponsible remarks."

Storyline

China on Monday urged Canada to respect the rule of law and China's judicial sovereignty and stop making irresponsible statements.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to phone calls made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong over the death penalty given by China to a Canadian drug smuggler.

According to Trudeau's office, the prime minister thanked Merkel for her open support for Canada.

"What Canada has recently done reminds me of a Chinese ancient saying 'making an empty show of strength'," Hua said.

"Firstly, the Canadian side's attempt to woo its so-called allies through microphones to whitewash the issue is in vain and is of no help to resolve it," the spokeswoman said.

"Secondly, as for Canada's gratitude for supports from its so-called allies, Germany has not released relevant information. So we have no idea about where Germany's open supports came from," Hua said.

As the Singaporean side said in a statement that it's important for all countries to follow legal procedures when dealing with cases with foreign citizens involved, Hua said it is right.

"That's exactly what the Chinese side does. It handles relevant cases by upholding the spirit of the rule of law and following legal procedures. And we wish the Canadian side to do so. I, once again urge Canada to respect the rule of law and China's judicial sovereignty, and stop making irresponsible remarks," she said.

Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, a Canadian national convicted of smuggling over 222 kg of methamphetamines, was sentenced to death on charges of drug smuggling on Jan. 14 by the Dalian Intermediate People's Court in northeast China's Liaoning Province.
