"And then we have to accept new realities and reforms, but there is a new approach that we see in the world today, an approach that harbors doubts as to the validity of the international system. They say 'shouldn't we look after our own interests first' and then out of that develop an order that is good for all. I have my grave doubts that this is the right way to go about it. I think our national interests -- I think we should always understand them in such a way that we always remember that others also have their own vested interests, factor them in, and then shape a win-win situation that will guide us in international politics."

Storyline

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her "grave doubts" about the direction taken against the international system, but noted that there was room for compromise and reform, in her speech to attendees at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting on Wednesday in Davos, Switzerland.

Merkel reminded the impact of the slowdown of global economic growth on the existing multilateral system, noting that the current forecasts showing declining growth rates lead to a number of "disturbances and uncertainties in the multilateral system."

She said that the disruptions in the multilateral system put the international order under pressure, which the international institutions should consider a "warning shot".

"There is a new approach that we see in the world today, an approach that harbors doubts as to the validity of the international system. They say 'shouldn't we look after our own interests first' and then out of that develop an order that is good for all. I have my grave doubts that this is the right way to go about it. I think our national interests -- I think we should always understand them in such a way that we always remember that others also have their own vested interests, factor them in, and then shape a win-win situation that will guide us in international politics," said Merkel.

The German chancellor also called on reform of international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to reflect the new balance of power in the world.

Attended by over 60 heads of state or government, 40 international organization heads and 1,700 business leaders, the four-day WEF meeting kicked off on Tuesday. It is themed "Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution".
