Storyline

A series of Chinese Spring Festival celebrations took place in countries and regions around the world including Britain and the United States over the weekend, with local people and Chinese joining each other to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

London hosted on Sunday one of the largest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Asia, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the heart of the British capital to share the joy.

The celebration began with a grand parade featuring 30 teams including a Chinese Dragon and Lion team, an iconic London double-decker bus and a variety of floats streaming through the streets from Trafalgar Square, via West End before reaching its final destination Chinatown.

More live entertainments were presented on the many stages set up around Chinatown while a martial arts and cultural zone was also put up to offer a show of Chinese handicrafts, Chinese zodiac animals and a dim sum feast.

Chinese Ambassador to Britain Liu Xiaoming has been in the United Kingdom for nine years. In an interview with China Central Television, Liu said he could feel more and more Chinese holiday atmosphere in the country in recent years.

"I feel that the British people are becoming more and more interested in Spring Festival. It should be credited to our country's development and our impact in the world. British people are more curious about China, and China is getting closer and closer to them. Spring Festival is coming to their side. I always say that Spring Festival has become a holiday that is shared by both Chinese and British people," Liu said.

London's Mayor Sadiq Khan joined the celebration on the day and sent his best wishes for the Chinese New Year.

"Happy New Year, wishing you prosperity, Happy Chinese New Year. Happy New Year in the Year of Pig. I'm really excited to be at the biggest celebration of the Chinese new year anywhere in the world outside of Asia, which demonstrates the fact that we've recognized the massive contributions made by Londonese of Chinese origin, but also China men and women coming to our city as business people, as students and tourists," he said.

In North Carolina, the United States, a celebration featured a gala performance rich in a variety of Chinese arts and crafts, including Chinese calligraphy, handkerchief, paper-cutting enjoyed by students and their family members from the South Iredell High School and local communities on Saturday.

Martin Page, Iredell-Statesville Board of Education Chairman, said he appreciated this opportunity to introduce Chinese culture to local students.

"It's just wonderful. The more we can do this, the more we will understand each other. And that's the whole reason we're doing this cultural exchanges. It's a wonderful, wonderful experience for all of our students. It's no longer a country culture, it's a world culture now, you know, and we've got to understand each other. And the more we understand each other, the better we're gonna get along. That's what important," he said.

Traditionally the grandest occasion for family reunion in China, the Spring Festival is in the start of the Chinese New Year. The 15-day Spring Festival is also observed by Chinese communities abroad. The Spring Festival begins on the first day of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. The celebration culminates 15 days later with the Spring Lantern Festival.
