Storyline

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday expressed strong opposition to the Turkish Foreign Ministry's groundless accusations involving northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman on Saturday made groundless accusations against China's policy about Xinjiang, alleging that Uygur musician Abdurehim Heyit died during his detention and cast China's vocational education programs in Xinjiang as "torture and political brainwashing camps and prisons".

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular conference in Beijing that Abdurehim Heyit is alive and in good health.

"I saw his video on the Internet yesterday, showing that he's not only alive but also very healthy. Turkey made groundless accusations against China based on the absurd lie of portraying the living as dead. This is extremely wrong and irresponsible, and we firmly oppose it," said Hua.

The Chinese Embassy to Turkey said on Sunday that the vocational education programs in Xinjiang are part of the government efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.

The vocational education center is teaching people living in remote areas about the country's common language and law, and is aimed at preventing the spread of terrorism and extremism, the embassy said in a statement.

The Chinese Embassy said that 57-year-old Abdurehim Heyit was an actor working for a troupe in Xinjiang, and was later arrested for endangering national security.
