The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have presented a joint proposal to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) based in Lausanne, Switzerland to co-host the Summer Olympic Games in 2032.
The two countries both sent delegations to the Swiss city.
Olympic officials are calling it an "historic initiative."
It began with a two and a half hour discussion that took place behind closed doors.
A year ago, the DPRK's last-moment decision to send a team to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games was seen as an important symbolic move.
So emerging from the meeting, Olympic officials made clear a successful bid would depend on changes well outside the remit of sport.
The decision on who will host the Summer Olympic Games in 2032 is due in 2025.
The IOC has also given the green light on Friday to the DPRK and the ROK for their four unified teams towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Tokyo Games will thus become the first Summer Olympic Games in which the two Koreas will have four joint teams in women's basketball, women's field hockey, mixed team event of judo and six rowing events, should they qualify for the concerned tournaments.
