"We are building farmland that provides high and stable yield, and then we will further improve agricultural mechanization rate, so that the progress in agricultural science and technology will be further improved and more improved varieties be planted. In fact, it will put us in a more advantageous position in the international market."

China will build 80 million mu (about 5.33 million hectares) of high-standard farmland in 2019 and a total of 800 million mu (about 53.33 million hectares) by 2020, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on Sunday.
This year's endeavor to build high-standard farmland will focus on functional areas for grain production and major reserves of agricultural products.
To ensure grain output, China started to build high-standard farmland since 2011, and a total of 640 million mu (about 42.67 million hectares) have been built by the end of 2018.
The per mu (about 0.07 hectare) yield of high-standard farmland has been increased by about 100 kilograms, water consumption per mu has been reduced by 24.3 percent, and the use of fertilizer and pesticide has also been reduced by 13.8 percent and 19.1 percent respectively.
"We are building farmland that provides high and stable yield, and then we will further improve agricultural mechanization rate, so that the progress in agricultural science and technology will be further improved and more improved varieties be planted. In fact, it will put us in a more advantageous position in the international market," said Zhang Xiaoshan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
At present, about two thirds of the arable land in China is medium and low-yielding land, and more than half still lacks irrigation facilities.
According to the rural revitalization strategy plan, China will build one billion mu (about 66.67 million hectares) of high-standard farmland by 2022, when about half of China's arable land will become high-standard farmland.
