Storyline

Fabulous light and lantern shows have been staged in northern China cites, including Panjin, Jinan, Zhuozhou and Xi'an to celebrate the upcoming Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, or Tuesday this year.

In northeast China's Liaoning Province, a dreamlike light show with local characteristics and folk customs, kicked off at the Center Castle Scenic Area of Panjin City.

The splendid lights replicated a signature view of Panjin. For instance, the ribbon-like red lights are replica of Suaeda glauca, a plant unique to Panjin, which look like red sea if observed from afar.

A local resident who was fascinated by the gorgeous view said, "I was just inside the gate. I think the lights at center are very shinning and I'd like to go closer to see them."

Besides, fishing culture element was also presented in light shows, with fishing boats decorated with lights.

In east China's Shandong Province, a lantern show held in Baotu Spring Park saw its peak time on Saturday, with nearly 50,000 visitors enjoying the delighting festival atmosphere.

Adorable pig-shaped lantern sets are proved to be super stars at the lantern show, attracting tourists to take pictures with them in memory of the Year of the Pig.

A total of over 40 large lantern sets were arranged in park, featuring a combination of advanced sound, lantern and electronic technologies.

Amid various lantern sets are space-themed lanterns that attracted Zheng Shiwei, a tourist. He said, "What behind me is a lantern set featuring China Aerospace, which reminds me of the successful landing of Chang'e-4 probe and the lunar rover Yutu-2 on the far side of the Moon last month."

In Zhuozhou City, north China's Hebei Province, a small town called Dongchengfang has become a wonderful place to visit during the Lantern Festival.

Compared with traditional lantern show, this year's lantern show is much large in scale, displaying near 10,000 colorful lanterns at the town.

Enjoying the visual feast, a tourist said, "I've come with my children and other family members to watch the lantern show. I think it's good to add auspicious atmosphere to the Spring Festival."

This year's lantern shows have highlighted the elements of environment protection and technology advancement. LED new energy lanterns are widely used to save electricity.

In northwest China's Shaanxi Province, people were amazed by a flash mob happening in front of the Yongning Gate of Xi'an City.

The 20-minute performance staged at 18:30 on Sunday presented a perfect fusion of lantern show and the ancient city.

With snowflakes fluttering and beaming lights projected on thousand-year-old ancient walls, tourists immersed themselves in an illusion of prosperous Tang Dynasty (618-907).

"It took us one week to make careful preparation. A total of 60 artist wearing Tang costumes of consorts, officials and warriors present what the Tang Dynasty culture was like," said Yan Jie, staff member of the Xi'an City Wall Scenic Area.
