China's top legislator Li Zhanshu met with a delegation of Japanese House of Councilors in Beijing on Monday, calling for enhanced parliamentary exchanges and bilateral ties.
The Japanese delegation will attend the 8th meeting of the regular exchange mechanism between China's National People's Congress (NPC) and Japan's House of Councilors held in China.
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC, said China and Japan are close neighbors; peace and friendly cooperation between the two nations not only benefits the two peoples, but also makes great contribution to peace, stability, and development of the region and the world.
Over the past year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held three meetings and reached important consensus, bringing the China-Japan ties back on track.
Noting this year marks an important opportunity for further improvement and development of China-Japan relations, Li called on the two sides to implement the consensus of the two heads of state, enhance strategic security and mutual trust, as well as expand pragmatic cooperation in economy, culture and youth exchanges.
The NPC is ready to maintain exchanges and cooperation with the Japanese House of Councilors and make greater contributions to promoting the development of bilateral relations, Li said.
Satoshi Ninoyu, head of the Japanese delegation, said that Japan's House of Councilors is willing to strengthen exchanges with the NPC and make more efforts to deepen bilateral ties.
