Storyline

The ancient buildings of the Forbidden City in Beijing will be lit up in multi colors on Tuesday night, the Lantern Festival, for the first time since it was made the Palace Museum 94 years ago and open free to the public.

Areas including the Yanchi Building in the Meridian Gate, the Supreme Harmony Gate, the Supreme Harmony Hall, the Southeast Turret, the Donghua Gate, the northeast Turret and the Shenwu Gate will be lit up by various lanterns, lights and LEDs.

"On the night of the Lantern Festival, we will light up a part of the Forbidden City by the lights with the ancient buildings as the background. Not all of the ancient buildings in the Forbidden City are included as this is a preliminary practice, but we hope the visitors can see a different Forbidden City compared with the one in the daytime," said Shan Jixiang, curator of the Palace Museum.

The Meridian Gate Tower, the East Yanchi Building and the West Yanchi Building will be decorated with white, yellow and red light sources, and echo riotously with the original color of the red palace walls, the yellow glazed tiles and the carved beams and painted rafters, to greet the visitors before entering the museum.

"We have arranged more than 800 LEDs, and through a wave-like conversion, we can let everyone see a more lively, more three-dimensional and vivid Meridian Gate on the night of the Lantern Festival," said Zhao Qinfeng, head of the Night of the Lantern Festival program in the Forbidden City.

After entering from the Meridian Gate, visitors will be amazed by the Square of the Supreme Harmony Gate, a nightscape of over 3,000 square meters, flooded by 20 state-of-the-art 55,000-lumen laser projection equipments.

"We still maintain the peaceful and stable state of the Forbidden City. There are five sets of brand new displays of the Supreme Harmony Gate. We will create five to eight pictures to show for the visitors. It must be a very amazing state," said Zhang Xianpeng, who is in charge of the Supreme Harmony Gate project.

Then the crowds can enjoy the wonderful performance of Chinese lute and an exhibition of the traditional Chinese culture, and proceed to walk along the palace wall dotted with red lanterns to the Southeast Turret and the Donghua Gate.

"Walking along the palace wall, visitors will feel like walking in a painting, which creates an atmosphere of joy and peace, and let everyone feel the joy of the Chinese New Year," said Ren Wanping, deputy curator of the Palace Museum.
