Storyline

Education and health care might become the pioneer for the cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to experts.

A blueprint of the Greater Bay Area was unveiled on Monday. It encourages Hong Kong and Macao residents to study in mainland schools or work in state-owned enterprises or even government agencies. The quality education resources in Hong Kong will also help to improve the educational system in Chinese mainland.

"Hong Kong has five world famous universities, while there is only one university in Shenzhen City. If we can introduce more Hong Kong universities to the mainland and cooperate with them, there will be a large space for us to explore," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice chairman of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE).

The experts suggested that to build a complete educational system in the Greater Bay Area through bringing in the universities of Hong Kong and sharing the educational resources will cultivate numerous talents for the region's development.

"If we allow universities like the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to run schools independently in the Chinese mainland, it will in turn motivate the reform of our higher education," said Wang Fuqiang, head of the industry planning department of the CCIEE.

In addition, medical services in Hong Kong and Macao are more advanced than that in the mainland where the market demand is really large, so the cooperation in this field will develop first.

"Hong Kong has a relatively high level of medical services, especially in some advanced drugs and treatment methods. When we facilitate the flow of them, it will be more convenient for the residents of the Greater Bay Area to go there to get medical treatment," said Zhang.

Wang further expressed that based on the advantages of Hong Kong and Macao and integrating the world's high-end medical resources, China can build a world medical center in the Greater Bay Area, which is the desire of the Hong Kong people and the requirement of the residents in the mainland.
