"The robbers broke into our hotel. Their behaviors were different from the local people. Unfortunately, they chose the Inkaterra property as their target and robbed the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. By what means they reached here is not yet known. We do not know whether they came by water or road. They probably came by water since it would take a long time by road. The police are now investigating. I guess they were familiar with neither the local conditions nor the hotel. They might not have planned the robbery or felt out the terrain in advance."

Storyline

The founder of a luxury Peruvian hotel that was robbed recently disclosed some details about the robbery during an exclusive interview with China Central Television on Thursday.

The robbery happened Tuesday night when armed robbers broke into the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Madre de Dios, where 41 Chinese tourists were checked in. The robbers escaped after killing a local tour guide. No Chinese tourists were injured.

They might not have planned the robbery or felt out the terrain in advance," said Jose Koechlin, founder of Inkaterra and serves as its chairman and chief executive officer.

According to Koechlin, the manager on duty in the hotel immediately cut off the power supply after spotting the intruders via security cameras and organized hotel staff to evacuate lodgers to safety.

"Our hotel can receive 70 lodgers at maximum but has 120 workers. Our hotel has an emergency package and our staff's reaction in the incident proves the effectiveness of the package. We set up the emergency mechanism to prevent serious consequences," said Koechlin.

The Peruvian authorities are paying high attention to this case and it is reported that Luis Hidalgo Okimura, the regional governor of Madre de Dios, described the robbery as a "worrying situation".

"The Peruvian authorities are paying high attention to this case. It is an unusual case and happened in a remote area. Many officials view it as an extremely serious problem and it has aroused wide attention in Peru," said Koechlin.

A representative of the hotel said they have beefed up efforts to protect the safety of lodgers and workers. The hotel mainly receives guests from Europe and America, but the number of Chinese guests have increased in recent years along with the closer trade and cultural exchange between Peru and China. The proportion of Chinese lodgers in the hotel was 13 percent in 2018.

Data from the Peruvian tourist department shows that four robbery cases targeting tourists occurred in Madre de Dios in January this year.
