The 5G technology is to play a great role in the era of Internet of Things (IoT), said Lei Jun, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi on Friday.

"The 5G is a very hot topic. It not only has a broad application prospect in communication and smart phones, but also has a promising future in the era of IoT," Lei said during a group interview on the sidelines of the second session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC).

"As to the IoT, it is a popular trend to integrate 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT together. Some people say that the three together represents the next generation of super internet, and I quite agree with the idea," said Lei, who is also a deputy to the 13th NPC.

Lei gave several examples of the 5G application in several fields.

"The 5G technology has a broad space of development in IoT, such as in developing smart home, the internet of vehicles, unmanned driving, smart cities, smart healthcare and smart village," Lei said.

Xiaomi unveiled its hottest new model at a press conference on the eve of the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, with the high-tech device able to take advantage of the much-anticipated, super-fast 5G mobile networks.

Lei said that Xiaomi aims to make new breakthroughs to further explore the use of 5G in the fields of AI and IoT.

The NPC, China's top legislature, is the country's highest institution through which the Chinese people exercise their state power. It focuses on major national-level political and socioeconomic development issues.

The second session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) held its closing meeting on Friday morning.
