The spokesman, Geng Shuang, told a regular news briefing in Beijing that "China conveys its sympathies to Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe for damage, heavy casualties and major property losses inflicted by Cyclone Idai and expressed condolences to the victims. Tropical Cyclone Idai slammed Mozambique when it landed in the country last week, and went on to batter Zimbabwe and Malawi, bringing strong winds, heavy rains and floods.

The National Institute for Disaster Management of Mozambique said Monday more than the cyclone killed 84 people and injured 1,500 others.

Zimbabwe's Ministry of Information said Monday on Twitter that at least 98 were died in his country.
