Storyline

Montargis, a southern French city where many Chinese revolutionaries worked and studied, spawns new interest for China, as this year marks the centennial of the Work-Study Movement of Chinese in France.

Starting in 1919, thousands of progressive young Chinese went to France, where they worked in factories in Paris, Lyon and Montargis to pay for their studies in the European country. Some of them became interested in Marxism and established one of the earliest Chinese communist party groups in France.

Among these prominent figures were late Chinese leaders Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping. The movement has also promoted cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two sides.

Wang Peiwen, who have lived in Montargis for over two decades, founded a museum on French-Chinese friendship history to keep the archive of the Work-Study Movement.

The local government also took steps to preserve the history. It named the plaza in front of the Montargis Railway Station after Deng Xiaoping.

This official move has not only attracted Chinese tourists, but also a growing number of locals interested in Chinese culture.

"There are many people in Montargis very interested in China. The Museum on History of French-Chinese Friendship is an important bond for Chinese-French friendship. People know the history through it," said Benoit Digeon, mayor of Montargis.

"When I first came to the city, I did not know the history, but when I said I would teach Chinese in Montargis, people told me Montargis is a city of strong relations with China," said a teacher of Chinese.

Commemorative events will be held to mark the centennial of the Work-Study Movement.

"We will build a new monument for the centennial. We will invite a famous Chinese artist to design it, and we will present beautiful audio-visual materials to show the spirit of the Chinese people at that time. To us, it is a very important ceremony," Digeon said.
