Storyline

The Krauch Chhmar Bridge, which will cross the Mekong River in Cambodia, is scheduled for completion by the end of next year, according to the Shanghai Construction Engineering Group, which contracted for the bridge.

The bridge connects Krauch Chhmar with Stung Treng. It will be the first bridge to cross the 500-km-long Mekong River in Cambodia.

The completion of the bridge, which is extolled as a "dream bridge" by the local people, is expected to make much easier the travel of local people and will stimulate the economic development in the middle and northern parts of the country.

Work started at the end of 2017. The project was contracted by the Shanghai Construction Engineering Group, which has undertaken 21 projects since 2004, including 1,758 km of roads and 6 super-large bridges totaling 6,779 meters.

"I hope that the bridge will be finished at an early date so that we will no longer spend so much time waiting for the ferries," said Nhor Kosserymom, a local resident, who used to spend hours to wait for the irregular ferry service if he wanted to go to town in Stung Trang.

"It is really troublesome to take the ferry. I'm very happy to see the bridge being built. My thanks go to Chinese brothers and sisters," said Heng Samat, another local resident.

At the bridge construction site, local workers are seen among Chinese workers, learning while doing. The Chinese enterprise undertakes the training of the workers.

"I'm learning while doing, chewing over again and again what I've learned," said Sen Sokliv, a Cambodian constructor.

Tian Lei, chief engineer of the project, praised Sokliv and his fellow workers for their good sense of safety in doing their work.
