Storyline

Lu Kang, spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, refuted a U.S. official's slander on its relations with Latin America at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.

Lu rebutted some comments on China-Latin America relations made by Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State of the United States, during his visit to Chile and some other Latin American countries.

"China has followed the principle of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation in its cooperating with Latin American countries, with the focus on common development. This has effectively helped Latin American countries with their economic development and improvement of people's livelihood," said Lu.

Lu cited the cooperation between China and Chile as an example.

The trade volume between the two countries reached 42.8 billion U.S. dollars last year, Lu said.

Chile's export to China was 26.9 billion U.S. dollars, up 26.9 percent year on year. And China's investment in Chile the same year exceeded six billion U.S. dollars.

These facts have proven that what China brings to the Latin American countries are opportunities, said Lu.

Lu also refuted Pompeo's false accusations against China on the Venezuela issue, saying that China’s position on the Venezuela issue is clear and consistent and what China has upheld are the tenet and principles of the UN Charter and regional peace and stability.

"U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo willfully slandered China and its relations with Latin America, deliberately sowed discords among them, this is irresponsible and unreasonable. We are strongly against it. For a long time, the U.S. has regarded Latin America as its backyard, often imposing pressures on them or threatening them, even subverting others' state powers. Justice is in people's hearts. Who is a true friend, who is a false one, and who ignores rules and spreads chaos, I believe the Latin American countries will make their correct judgment," Lu said.

Pompeo is on his three-day tour to four Latin American countries, which started on Friday.

"For a period of time, some American politicians have slandered and maligned China around the world with a same libretto, stirring up troubles and sowing discords everywhere. Such words and deeds are contemptible. However, lies are lies, even they are repeated one thousand times. Mr. Pompeo can rest for a while," said Lu.
