Storyline

Workers on Monday started laying tracks for the Beijing section of an intercity railway linking the capital with Xiongan New Area.

The intercity railway line, set to be operational by 2020, will be an important link between the urban areas of Beijing, the Beijing new airport and Xiongan New Area.

The Beijing section of the railway line is expected to start operation in September this year along with the Beijing Daxing International Airport or the Beijing new airport.

The total length of the intercity railway is 214 kilometers. Workers are laying down 69 km of track linking Liying Station with the new airport, and the work needs to be completed by April 30, according to the construction plan.

"We have 15 days to finish track-laying, from April 15 to April 30. Then we will conduct stress dissipation and track welding, and then fine-tuning. The project will meet the requirement for acceptance testing in June. On July 20, we will enter the trial operation. After that, the railway will start operating in September," said Deng Yinjie, an official with the China Railway Beijing Group

An intelligent transport and dispatch control system is used for track-laying. By embedding the Beidou satellite positioning system, the control system can accurately locate the traveling position of the locomotives on the line.

"In the past, we had to make phone calls or talk on interphones to know the field situation. Now anyone can see the situation at the dispatch center. In addition, we are connected to a mobile app. As long as you are authorized to log in, you can see the location of locomotives on the cellphone, realizing safe, accurate and intelligent track-laying," said Wang Xiupeng, director of the railway project.

The intercity rail link will cut the commuting time between urban areas of Beijing and Xiongan from two hours to 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, commuting between Beijing new airport and other major cities in the core areas of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, such as Tianjin and Baoding, will only take no more than one hour.

"The Beijing-Xiongan intercity railway connects Beijing's new airport and the Xiongan New Area, with the new airport being in between. The railway will serve not only Beijing, but also the Xiongan New Area and Hebei Province, and will greatly promote the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region," said Deng.
