The 21st Kimilsungia flower exhibition opened in Pyongyang, capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on Friday, to mark the 107th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, founder of the DPRK and grandfather of the country's current top leader Kim Jong Un.
Known as the "Day of the Sun," April 15 is the most important national holiday of DPRK, with large-scale political events and celebration activities held throughout the nation.
This year, nearly 100 governmental departments and army units of all levels in the DPRK presented over 30,000 Kimilsungia flowers to the event held at the Kimilsungia-Kimjongilia Exhibition Hall.
"Here we have more than 350 Kimilsungia flowers exhibited, with 50 of them provided by friendly groups and people from many other countries. We have earnestly cultivated the Kimilsungia flowers by using advanced scientific technologies, so you can see more than 30 blossoms on each stem of the flowers," said an exhibition interpreter at the booth of the DPRK's Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries.
Viewing and taking pictures beside the Kimilsungia flowers around "Day of the Sun" have become a favorite way of local people to celebrate the grand holiday with family and friends.
Kimilsungia is a hybrid orchid, named after Kim Il Sung by then Indonesian President Sukarno in 1965 when Kim visited the southeast Asian country. The exhibition of Kimilsungia flowers was first held in 1999.
