Storyline

The Belt and Road Initiative China-Nigeria Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum was held in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, on Tuesday, attracting many stakeholders and representatives from the private sector from both Nigeria and China.

At the forum's opening ceremony, Zhao Yong, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, said that thanks to the joint efforts of the Chinese and Nigerian governments, two countries' relations are now better than ever. In 2018, their bilateral trade value reached 15.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.8 percent year on year.

"The Belt and Road Initiative, though it originated from China, belongs to the whole world and will benefit the people all across the world. As another end and a [natural] extension of the ancient Silk Road and now as China's strategic partner, Africa is an indispensable part of the Belt and Road map," said Zhao.

The second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation will be held in late April in Beijing, where leaders and businesspeople from over 148 countries and regions, as well as 73 international organizations, will gather to discuss cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Nigeria also will send a delegation to participate in the forum. Edet Sunday Akpan, Nigeria's Permanent Secretary of Industry, Trade and Investment, pointed out that Nigerian enterprises should seize the chance to develop themselves and bring benefits to both countries.

"Nigeria shares the objectives of the Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to develop economic partnership and build a community of shared interest and responsibility, and a shared future on the basis of mutual trust, economic integration, and cultural inclusiveness," said Akpan.

The Chinese Embassy also hosted the China-Nigeria Enterprise Exchange Exhibition at the forum's venue from Monday to Wednesday, attracting more than 100 companies. The exhibition also facilitated rooms for Nigerian enterprises to communicate and cooperate with Chinese businesses.

Proposed by China in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and aims to build a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa through the ancient trade routes of the Silk Road.
