Storyline

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy seen its comprehensive proficiencies significantly enhanced with the support of more advanced equipment and more frequent military drills in its transformation and development over recent years.

In March, China's first domestically-built aircraft carrier conducted the fifth sea trial, which tested the command control system and combat performance of the carrier.

So far, the carrier has completed missions to test its mooring, power, combat and support systems.

Aircraft carrier formation is an important symbol of the naval transformation and development. Liaoning, a refitted Soviet Union-made aircraft carrier, was put into commission in the PLA Navy in 2012, which enabled the Chinese navy to start its transformation and development from offshore waters defense onto integration of offshore waters defense with high sea escort.

"As the navy's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning has played a role in exploration in all aspects, including operation application, military exercises, equipment, logistical support, personnel training and management. These achievements and experiences are very important to the construction and development of the navy's aircraft carriers, and will be our main work in the next few years," said Lu Qiangqiang, vice-captain of Liaoning.

The Southern Theater Command of the Chinese Navy recently conducted an anti-submarine drill. Anti-submarine warfare is a common problem faced by all navies. Its difficulty lies in how to find the enemy as early as possible in the vast sea and quickly attack it after confirming the target.

"The navy's trainings have mainly focused on confrontation in recent years. And our real combat capacities have been greatly improved," said Hu Jie, captain of missile destroyer Changchun.

The Chinese Navy strives to build a credible and reliable sea-based nuclear force. As nuclear submarines are becoming an important heavyweight of China's strategic check-and-balance capacity, a new generation of strategic nuclear forces is in an accelerated process of forming combat capability.

"A weighty treasure of our country is leap-forward progress in the development of the nuclear deterrent and nuclear counterattack capability. We are sure that no country will have the idea of using nuclear weapons against us in the future. This is a huge progress in our naval combat capabilities," said Yin Zhuo, a military expert.

Meanwhile, the expert said the Chinese Navy also faces challenges.

"Our joint campaign outline and joint operation regulations must be refined in the future. They need to be revised, and we must adapt to them. These are all challenges. In face of the challenges, our Navy will have to undergo more profound and more extensive development in the enhancement of its ocean-going combat capacity. These challenges also mean space for our development," said Yin.

This year marks the 70th founding anniversary of the PLA Navy.
