China's economic performance in the first three months of 2019 was stable with further structural improvements obtained, according to the country's top economic planner on Thursday.

Yuan Da, spokesman for the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said major economic indicators such as investment and electricity generation and consumption were steady at a regular press conference in Beijing.

In terms of investment, the NDRC approved a total of 50 projects on fixed-asset investment in such sectors as energy, transportation and high technology, worth 370.3 billion yuan, or 55.32 billion U.S. dollars, in the first quarter of the year.

Chinese electricity generation in the first three months in 2019 grew by 4.2 percent year on year, or 1.3 percentage points higher than that in January-February period. Its total electricity consumption from January to March was 1.68 trillion kilowatt hours, an increase of 5.5 percent compared with the same period last year. In particular, electricity consumption by the tertiary industry and households maintained a two-digit increase.

The emerging industries remained a momentum in growth and hi-tech sector saw its added value increasing by 7.8 percent, or 1.3 percentage points higher than all the other enterprises above designated size. The service industry maintained relatively fast growth. There was booming entrepreneurship and business running. The first quarter saw 53,000 new market entities registered on a daily basis, up 26.3 percent year on year. In particular, 16,500 such entities were companies, increasing by 12.3 percent, or 6.9 percentage points higher than that of the same period of last year.
