Storyline

Environmental activists and protesters continue their protest for more attention and immediate action to cope with climate change for a third straight day by blocking several streets around Oxford Circus, a major shopping destination and popular tourist attraction in central London, on Monday.

The protesters are part of a grassroots group calling themselves the Extinction Rebellion.

Marble Arch in central London is at the heart of the Extinction Rebellion campaign. The site is located at the west end of Oxford Street, one of the capital's busiest shopping areas. It's one of the four big thoroughfares the campaigners are targeting in the city.

In its third day, the protest is understood to have already cost local businesses over 15 million U.S. dollars, according to the New West End company, a group representing firms in the area.

Takings and footfall are said to be down by up to 25 percent in some stores.

Extinction Rebellion are targeting the capital's transport system. Tubes and train services are being disrupted.

Responding to the new tactic, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said in a statement that he shares "the passion of all those protesting in London this week about the urgent need to tackle climate change, but warns that the protest might have potentially gone too far as it's affecting the capital's livelihood."

Meanwhile the Easter weekend, one of the country's busiest holidays starts on Friday. Extinction Rebellion wants the protest to continue for two weeks. Any commuter struggling to get home or travel may be concerned about their journeys.
