China offers deep condolences for the death of former Peruvian president Alan Garcia and extends sincere sympathy to his family, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Thursday.
Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia died on Wednesday in a hospital in Lima. His lawyer confirmed that Garcia shot himself in the head to avoid a preliminary arrest ordered by the justice authorities for his alleged links to the corruption scandal of Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.
"Former President Alan Garcia was friendly to China for a long time before his death, and he attached great importance to his country's relationship with China. Due to his support, China and Peru had developed a strategic partnership and signed free trade agreements. He had made positive contribution to promoting friendship between the peoples of China and Peru, and deepened exchanges and cooperation in all fields between the two countries. We offer our deep condolences for the death of former Peruvian President Alan Garcia, and we want to extend our sincere sympathy to his family," Lu said at a press conference in Beijing.
Garcia's supporters, shocked and angry over his death, gathered outside the hospital on Wednesday as a gesture of support.
Garcia served as president of Peru from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2011.
