Storyline

The chairman of the National Election Authority in Egypt on Wednesday called on the Egyptian people to vote on the upcoming referendum of constitutional amendment.

With two days before the vote, Cairo's streets are covered with banners, urging the general public to cast their vote in the upcoming referendum.

"I urge the youth to ignore the calls to boycott the vote, and instead to voice their opinion by voting. The people's will is greater than the constitution. People are the one who create constitution and they are the one who give it life," said Lasheen Ibrahim, chairman of the National Election Authority.

The amendments include a transitional article that allows the current president to remain in office until 2024 and allow him to run for a second term of six years, possibly ruling until 2030 to give him more time in office to complete his reform vision.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has taken several bold measures as part of his reform vision since he took office. He has gradually lifted power subsidies and enforced austerity measures on the government.

"The massive move in petroleum exploration has made Egypt own one of the biggest natural gas reserves in the world. The country is building 22 new cities. For the first time, upper Egypt is building infrastructure that this region has not seen in 40 years. All these will make Egypt among the world's top 20 economies," said Osama Sharshar, member of parliament.

To increase the turnout, the ballots will open on April 20 and last for three days, until April 22.
