Storyline

No massive damage has been reported following the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that jolted an area off the coasts of Hualien County in Taiwan at 13:01 Thursday.

The earthquake, which is the strongest one to rock Taiwan this year, lasted for about 10 seconds. The focus of the quake was monitored at a depth of 24 kilometers and the quake took place at 24.02 degrees north latitude and 121.65 degrees east longitude.

The tremor was felt in the whole of Taiwan island. Two tourists were reported to have been injured by falling rocks on the Zhongheng Road and were sent to hospital.

The earthquake ripped open a hydrant in the Hualien Railway Station, with water flooding the terminal.

In the city of Taipei, the tube was re-opened after a temporary close for 90 minutes and the lifts in the city's landmark of Taipei 101 Tower remained closed.

Another building in Taipei was reported to have tilted, with broken ceramic tiles scattered on the floor. All the people in the building have been evacuated, and police have cordoned up the area.

A road in the Xinyi District was reported to have cracked, but no evidence show such damage is linked to the earthquake.

Taiwan has suffered 21 earthquakes with magnitudes higher than four so far this year. The Thursday's quake was the severest. The last earthquake that took place in Hualien County was in late January, which had a magnitude of 5.2 and in a depth of 20 km.
