The Chinese economy is seeing steady growth within proper range in April, according to statistics released by China's National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday.

Liu Aihua, spokesperson of the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics made the statement at a press conference in Beijing.

According to Liu, In April, China’s national service industry production index increased by 7.4 percent year-on-year, same as the first quarter. Among them, the modern service industry is growing well, faster than the national service industry production index.

China's value-added industrial output expanded 5.4 percent year on year in April. It is an important economic indicator used to measure the output of large companies each with annual main business revenue of more than 20 million yuan (about 2.9 million U.S. dollars). The growth rate was down by 3.1 percentage points from March, but 0.1 percentage points faster than the first two months. Among them, new industries and new products such as new energy vehicles and microcomputer equipment production grew rapidly, up 17.1 percent and 16.6 percent respectively.

China's retail sales of consumer goods rose 7.2 percent year on year in April, narrowed from an increase of 8.7 percent registered in March. Online retailing, among the overall retail market, has witnessed a sharp growth.

China's investment also maintained steady growth from January to April. National fixed asset investment increased by 6.1 percent year on year, and the growth rate dropped by 0.2 percentage points from the first quarter. High-tech industry investment made an extremely large contribution to the growth, with high-tech manufacturing and high-tech service investment growing 5.3 and 9.4 percentage points faster than average level respectively.

China's employment situation improved stably from January to April. The number of new jobs in cities and towns nationwide reached 4.59 million, completing 42 percent of the annual plan. In April, the national urban unemployment rate was 5.0 percent, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.
