Storyline

An Ethiopian economist recently said the U.S. policy of trade protectionism will not only do harm to its own economic development, but also have a negative effect on the global economy.

Gedion Gamora, who worked as a consultant at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa from 2008 to 2015, said the United States is violating the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"So in this regard, it's a kind of protectionism indeed that the U.S. is doing, which is against the principles of WTO regulations as well as that of globalization," said Gamora, who is also CEO of Addis Ababa-based Center of Excellence International Consult (CEIC) PLC.

Gamora also said China has been promoting multilateral cooperation and opening-up in recent years, and cooperating with many countries through Belt and Road Initiative, which is helpful for the steady development of Chinese economy.

U.S. protectionism, on the other hand, will not help its economic development at all, but give other countries chances to cooperate with China.

"Obliged China to look for another market than the U.S., like African countries, maybe Asian countries, maybe Latin American countries, maybe European countries and others. So this will enhance Chinese partnership with the rest of the world in terms of trade. And also there are some products that China was importing from the U.S., like agricultural products and like that, so this also give for other countries to export to China like neighboring Asian countries, as well as African countries, Latin American and others. It will provide them an opportunity that will have exports to China," said Gamora.

Gamora also said in 2018, the U.S. had trade deficits with over 100 countries, not only with China, which proves the U.S. is facing a shortage of domestic savings and that imposing tariffs on imported goods in no way helps cut its trade deficits.
