The U.S. is building up a tension about security situation in Iraq so as to gain leverage in its talks with Iran, said Iraqi political analyst Wathiq al-Hashimi in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV).
The U.S. Embassy in Iraq said Wednesday that the U.S. State Department has ordered the non-emergency U.S. employees working in both the embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil to leave Iraq. Earlier, the U.S. military said the U.S. forces were on high alert in Iraq and Syria over fears of "imminent threats" from Iran-backed forces in the region.
The U.S. Exxon Mobil oil company evacuated all its foreign workers out of West Qurna 1 oil field in Iraq's southern province of Basra, though Iraq's Oil Minister Thamir al-Ghadhban said Sunday that the evacuation was "unacceptable and unjustified."
Hashimi said the U.S. moves and the evacuation are a warning to Iran, as they came amid the tense situation in the region after U.S. President Donald Trump decided not to re-issue the sanctions waivers for major importers to continue buying Iran's oil when they expired in early May.
"Presidents of the U.S. and Iran and foreign ministers of the two countries previously visited Iraq in a row. Now the U.S. sends a warning signal to Iran that it is going to do something," Hashimi said.
The U.S. increased its military buildup in the region recently by deploying an aircraft carrier, bombers and anti-missile systems, citing a threat of Iranian attack. It is said more troops will be added in Iraq to pose a pressure on Iran.
But military conflicts between the U.S. and Iran are not possible in the short run, said Hashimi.
"The U.S. will continue escalating the tension in order to finally achieve three goals: first, stir up domestic protests in Iran by posing pressure on the country; second, strip Iran of its influence to other Middle Eastern countries; and the most important goal is to bring Iran back to the negotiation table but under the U.S. conditions," he said.
