Storyline


A small tornado hit a port located in Haikou City, south China's Hainan Province on Tuesday afternoon, reported local authorities.

The tornado stuck the local New Port around 13:30, uprooting plants and blowing up sand and sundries from the ground.

The dramatic moment was captured by several witnesses using their smartphones.

"I was standing with my colleagues in this harbor basin when I saw a very strong wind blow across this whole area. It blew the sandy soil up very high in the sky," said am eyewitness named Liu Qin.

A local expert explained the cause of the meteorological phenomenon.

"Some convective cells appeared around Hainan island, leading to this relatively weak tornado weather. The damage it caused was relatively small this time. It lasted only about one to two minutes, and there was no major damage," said Zheng Yan, chief reporter of the provincial meteorological observatory.
