Storyline

A 95-year-old veteran devoted himself to the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the people for over 60 years, hiding his great deeds in Chinese people's War of Liberation (1946-1949) the whole time until they were revealed in 2018.

Zhang Fuqing, a CPC member, was a soldier of Regiment 718 of Brigade 359 under the Northwest Field Army, which was one of the main forces of the Chinese People's Liberation Army during the Liberation War.

In an instruction on Zhang's life story, Chinese President Xi Jinping has recently called for carrying forward the spirit of dedication of Zhang, encouraging people to come together and create a powerful force to forge ahead in the new era.

When the authorities were collecting and recording veterans' information at the end of 2018, they found out his secretly-kept achievements.

"It took a while to believe that at the time because this kind of meritorious medal would have never been awarded to an average person," said Nie Haibo, staff member at Laifeng County Bureau of Veterans Affairs.

Zhang Jianquan, the veteran's son, was also shocked when he went to the bureau to deliver the papers. It was also the first time he had ever seen those medals of honor.

"My father kept these stuff neatly and locked them away in a small leather suitcase. I don't think he ever took them out. We also have never seen them before. It is the first time," said Zhang Jianquan, son of Zhang Fuqing.

Zhang was awarded a special certificate for his principal contributions in 1948, when he joined the Northwest Field Army.

In the Yongfeng Campaign that year, one of the decisive campaigns in the War of Liberation, Zhang took the lead to jump down from a 4-meter city wall and fought the battle.

"All I thought about was to go to the frontline as a commando. It would be my honor to sacrifice for the Communist Party and the people in their time of need. It would be worth it," he said.

Zhang was heavily injured during the battle which lasted until dawn. He blew up two enemy bunkers, and seized two machine guns and four boxes of ammunition.

Although he was lucky to survive the battle, his two fellows in the commando group never returned.

"They both sacrificed themselves for the Party. I have often missed them over the years and could never forget them," said Zhang.

Zhang was demobilized in 1955 and after that, he put away all his medals, together with his illustrious military exploits.

For more than 60 years, Zhang did not bring up the achievements to anyone.

"Many comrades who fought alongside me sacrificed their lives for the Party and the people. They all made more contributions to the Party and the people were than mine. I don't think there is anything to brag about myself," he said.

After being discharged from the army, Zhang took his wife to the poverty-stricken Laifeng County in central China's Hubei Province, at the call of the CPC.

"The more difficult and arduous the situation is, the more forward the Communist Party members ought to go," he said.

During his time at Laifeng County, Zhang helped local people massively overcome the drought periods, and also made a significant contribution to the building of the first road in the mountainous area there.

Xi said the hero lives a great life with his simplicity, purity, and indifference to fame and fortune, setting an example for both officers and soldiers in service and veterans of the armed forces.
