"In the last term of the European Parliament, far-right and nationalist factions took about 140 of the 751 seats and this year's elections are likely to increase their seats to 180 or 190 seats. If they end up forming into one or two party groups, then they will have more influence and become the third largest party group in the European Parliament."

"The UK and other European countries have actually realized how complicated and risky the Brexit is. The Brexit request can not doubt be approved, but even the UK understands that the loss outweighs the gain. So the trend of leaving the EU did not get much popularity."

"They spit in the soup but eat the soup. The far-right factions believe that if they can form an alliance, they could get out of the control of the European Commission and change the EU's policy direction to make it serve their own political pursuit. They want to fight against a diverse Europe by using a nationalist front. This is their new strategy which could put the EU in danger."

Storyline

Far-rightists are fighting against a diverse Europe and putting the European Union in danger, according to experts.

In this year's European Parliament elections that began on Thursday, some far-right parties, which used to be keen to an anti-establishment position, have however become the most active participants in the ongoing elections.

France's National Rally (formerly the National Front) became the biggest French party in the European Parliament elections in 2014. And polls show that the party, now led by Marine Le Pen, enjoys the highest approval rating in this year's elections.

Besides France, right-wing parties are emerging in other countries, including Sweden, Italy, Hungary and Austria, which experts say would have a huge impact on the European Parliament.

"In the last term of the European Parliament, far-right and nationalist factions took about 140 of the 751 seats and this year's elections are likely to increase their seats to 180 or 190 seats. If they end up forming into one or two party groups, then they will have more influence and become the third largest party group in the European Parliament," said Sylvain Kahn, an expert on geopolitics and history.

Many far-right parties have downplayed the request of leaving the EU and the domino effect Brexit predicted to trigger seemed not to happen.

"The UK and other European countries have actually realized how complicated and risky the Brexit is. The Brexit request can not doubt be approved, but even the UK understands that the loss outweighs the gain. So the trend of leaving the EU did not get much popularity," said Jacques Levy, another expert on geopolitics.

The National Rally is trying to get rid of its far-right tag by giving up the proposals of leaving the EU and the euro zone, but its election manifesto, which vows to reform the EU and replace integration with cooperation, still reflects the party's anti-establishment nature.

"They spit in the soup but eat the soup. The far-right factions believe that if they can form an alliance, they could get out of the control of the European Commission and change the EU's policy direction to make it serve their own political pursuit. They want to fight against a diverse Europe by using a nationalist front. This is their new strategy which could put the EU in danger," said Kahn.
