Storyline

Heavy downpours have resulting in widespread flooding in many areas of south and east China, causing significant damage, impacting on agriculture, and affecting thousands of local people.

The rain had a significant impact on south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with the local meteorological department upgrading to a yellow alert for heavy rain by 10:00 Sunday.

Almost 45,500 people were affected by the heavy rain in the city of Guilin, while over 2,400 people were urgently relocated, according to authorities. The deluge affected crops covering an area of well over 2,800 hectares, with 31 households reportedly collapsing, the Flood Control and Drought Relief department in Guilin City said.

In the Dong Autonomous County of Sanjiang, in Guangxi's Liuzhou City, houses and farmlands have also been flooded. The local government quickly organized villagers to transfer from their properties and moved to carry out disaster relief protocols, while arranging special personnel to implement traffic control measures on the affected roads.

The torrential rain flooded 29 counties and cities in east China's Fujian Province through until Sunday evening, with Sanming City being among the worst hit areas, with landslides and extensive flooding occurring in multiple areas.

The city saw 18 power supply lines suffer malfunctions, affecting nearly 2,300 households. By 16:00 Sunday, more than 9,800 affected people have been transferred. Braving the harsh weather, maintenance workers have now repaired 70 percent of the damaged power lines.

The continuous rain has also triggered land and mudslides affecting the villagers in Huangtan Town of the city's Jiangle County. The related departments have taken swift actions to help the affected villagers move to safe places, with over 160 villagers being successfully transferred.

Rainstorms also hit central China's Hunan Province, where a total of 84,000 people have been affected by the heavy rain which began on Thursday. As of 08:00 Saturday, rescuers have evacuated over 2,600 trapped residents.
