Storyline

At the ongoing 2019 FIP General World Stamp Exhibition exquisite stamps are on display in Wuhan, the capital city of central China's Hubei Province, and they will continue to be from June 11-17.

The week-long event by the FIP (Federation Internationale de Philatelie) also includes a competition for those issued stamps, which will be shown to the public at the International Expo Center of Wuhan.

Some precious items from collectors and from museums around the worldwide are also on display.

Though small in size, stamps can contain a significant amount of content, especially when they are made using micro-carving technology. For example, three stamp sets on display show poems from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and verses from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

"Dots and lines can be seen in each square. With a magnifying glass, for example, we can read one of [the Chinese poet] Du Fu's famous poems which describes the society in the Tang Dynasty. This mini-pane with a stamp set is just like a book," said Chen Bo, director of the academic department under the Wuhan Philatelic Association.

In the competition for exhibits, over 3,400 items were submitted using the required display method regulated by the organizing committee.

"There are 16 sheets of A4 paper in a panel. The stamps, together with the captions, should not be beyond the edges. There are at least five panels in a stamp album and there must be stamps in all five of them," said Xu Jianzhou, deputy secretary general of the organizing committee of this exhibition.

The judges for the competition are a team formed from more than 80 stamp experts from around the world. They will assess the exhibits in different categories.

What will mainly be taken into consideration by the judges will be the cultural values of the stamps such as their condition and the stories that can be told from them.

"To tell a story with stamps, you need to use words to explain. Judges will pick the winner considering who has the best story or gives the best argument under the same subject," said Xu.

China joined the FIP in 1983 and hosted the world stamp exhibition in 1999 and 2009.
