Storyline


Heavy rain incurred flooding in Heyuan City of south China's Guangdong Province, leaving seven people dead and one missing.

According to local authorities, the rain began to fall on Sunday and so far, 63 towns have been hit by flood waters.

Statistics show that a total of 114,550 people are affected, with 14,540 people transferred to safe places and 956 houses collapsed.

Six of the deaths and the missing person were residents of Lianping County, which is one of the most severely affected areas. Search and rescue work continues in the area.

"In the morning, our unmanned drones send us precise location information and after checking all the houses, we also confirmed with local authorities that no people were stranded," said Huang Lie, a firefighter

150 soldiers from a brigade of the 74th Group Army of Chinese People's Liberation Army were also dispatched to rescue affected people in Heyuan.

In Lianping's Shangping Town, the soldiers, together with local rescue forces, were divided into several groups to search for trapped people in four villages and evacuate them out of deluge.

At 02:00 on Tuesday morning, in spite of working for eight hours, the soldiers trudged into Shangyou Village, where people were still trapped. As the only road to the village was destroyed by the flooding.

"We just observed the village and the water is still flooding. Now the night has fallen. A number of villagers turned on flashlights and tried to talk with us. In general, they are still in good condition, and there's no hazardous situation," said Liu Gui, deputy leader of the brigade.

In Heyuan's Longchuan County, where one person was reported dead in the deluge, from 20:00 on Sunday to 14:00 on Monday, there were 24 towns hit by flooding. On Monday morning, local authorities initiated level-III flood prevention response, and all kindergartens, elementary and middle schools suspended classes.

On Tuesday morning, the rain began to weaken. Statistics show that around 28,000 people are affected in Longchuan, with over 2,000 transferred to safe places.

The flood also caused water levels of Fengshuba Reservoir to rise above the acceptable level. Local authorities conducted flood discharge on Monday night.
