Storyline


Screenings for various 4K ultra high definition programs were held Saturday evening alongside the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), with nearly 100 guests attending.

At the event, the guests watched the opening ceremony of the film festival live on the 4K ultra HD channel of the China Media Group (CMG).

They also viewed some of the great documentaries on the channel.

"The quality of the pictures, such as the restoration and stereo display of the images, are far better than what we assumed. It is very mind-blowing to me," said an audience member at the event.

Professionals in the television industry also shared their views on topics of the shooting experience with 4K ultra HD programs as well as the development ideas of the technology.

Chinese documentary director Yan Dong said that he hopes to shoot better documentaries with the 4K technology.

"We want to make use of the special technology of 4K and its specialized equipment to select better topics and overcome difficulties. In my view, this is also a pleasant experience that we professional documentary makers bring to mankind as we are living in harmony with nature," said Yan.

Since the launch of CCTV-4k on October 1, 2018 , a number of documentaries including "The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge" and "Aerial China" have been produced.

On its broadcast list are also quality programs including sports events, TV series and evening galas.

"The 4K ultra HD technology has greatly improved the resolution and the saturation of pictures, as well as the sound quality. It allows people to stay in and enjoy the programs basically just like in the cinema. I think it means a lot for the improvement of ordinary people's quality of life," said Xu Jin, director at the technology management center of China Central Television (CCTV).

Xu also explained the development plan of 4K broadcast from the CMG.

"Later on, the CMG will go to ultra HD broadcasting from the current HD broadcasting on our channels, such as the documentary channel, the art channel and the television drama channel," said Xu.

It was the first time that the opening ceremony of SIFF had been broadcast live by CMG with 4K ultra HD technology and on a 5G network.
