With the giant panda population steadily increasing, cubs born last year are getting the opportunity to learn from their mothers for a longer period of time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China's Chengdu City.
Before, giant panda cubs would be taken away from the mothers when they were only six months old. That was to make sure mother pandas can give birth to new cubs in the next year. Now, as the giant panda population continues to show signs of stability, cubs can enjoy maternal care for longer.
Now, the 12 cubs are learning essential life skills with their mothers and will not leave their mothers until they are between 18 months and 23 months old.
The breeders also take care to imitate a wild environment to help the cubs master all the skills they'll need to survive.
"We put bamboo shoots in baskets and we put bamboo tubes and bamboo on the ground to imitate eating bamboo in the wild. We also set up hammocks and other dangling items to help with exercise," said Wu Kongju, a senior staff member at the research base.
