Storyline

Police officers in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region recently rescued an injured brown bear from a hunter’s trap, the bear then returned to nature on its own.

The bear was found on June 28 by the forest protection team of Inner Mongolia’s Alongshan Forest Public Security Bureau when they were patrolling in a local forest. It was stuck in a hunter’s trap and was slightly injured, the police officers chose to temporarily withdraw as bears are mostly hostile.

"The injured bear was identified as a brown bear under second-class national protection. It is two years old and in good health condition. The bear was caught in a hunting trap, suffering some bruises, and could not escape from the trap by himself. Considering that the bear was discovered in the evening, the rescuers were afraid of being attacked, so we didn't begin to rescue it that evening," said Gao Bingzheng, political commissar of Alongshan Forest Public Security Bureau.

After making some preparations, the police returned to rescue the bear the next morning. They managed to anesthetize the brown bear through an anesthetic gun and safely removed the traps on the bear. After the traps were removed, the bear suddenly woke up and attacked the rescuers, luckily no one was injured. The bear then ran into the forest after the release.

The brown bear is one of the largest mammals on the land. It mainly inhabits in coniferous forests or mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests. In 2008, it was included in the red list of endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
