Storyline

The medical services of the Chinese and German armed forces started an integrated exercise on medical support in Germany's southern military base of Feldkirchen on Friday.

The four-day exercise is part of the drill codenamed "Combined Aid 2019," and it is the first time China's paramedical forces in complete units and with field equipment have been deployed in Europe.

Among other things, the Chinese and German troops were scheduled to execute an international humanitarian medical mission dealing with a medical emergency scenario with several batches of injured people in different locations, and also with a staged cholera outbreak.

The participating teams will practice joint command and control, and will learn to cooperate in treating and managing mass casualties in large-scale disease outbreaks. The aim is to improve the troops' ability to deal with such situations in a coordinated manner and to explore new principles and practices.

"From the coming in Germany, in processing, the deployment phase went very well. And since we started our combined exercising, our medical play, this runs in a fantastic way," said Colonel Schmidt, chief director of German troops in the China-Germany "Combined Aid 2019" exercise.

Many of the Chinese officers and soldiers have previous experience participating in medical support missions in major drills, international peacekeeping, flood relief, and earthquake relief.

The Chinese army also brought their latest generation field tents hospital system, crawler-type armored ambulance, wheeled armored ambulance and other medical equipments to set up a secondary hospital in the field and to display the latest achievements of the Chinese army in field first-aid vehicles.

"Chinese armed forces have in recent years actively participated in foreign cooperation and exchanges projects from joint exercises, emergent medical rescue and foreign military assistance to United Nations peacekeeping medical support, and accomplished outstanding achievements. These activities have effectively improved our army's ability in conducting overseas comprehensive medical service missions. The 'Combined Aid 2019" joint exercise with Germany this time is an important part of the foreign cooperation and exchanges of our medical services," said Senior Colonel Song Yu, member of directing team of the Chinese side of the exercise.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA)'s major foreign exchanges and cooperation projects in recent years include its aid to the fight against the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and Liberia; the "Peace Train-2018" joint humanitarian and medical rescue exercise in Laos; and the free clinics with Vietnamese army along the country's borders.

The combined exercise is the second of its kind. In 2016, the military medical services of the PLA and the German Bundeswehr conducted their first joint exercise based on a fictitious earthquake scenario in the Chinese city of Chongqing.
